What is TVL?
Total Value Locked (TVL) is the aggregate value of all assets deposited into a DeFi protocol at any given time. It is the primary metric used to measure the size and adoption of DeFi protocols, tracked by platforms like DeFi Llama.
Why TVL matters
- Trust signal — higher TVL generally indicates more users trust the protocol
- Liquidity depth — more TVL means deeper liquidity and better trade execution
- Protocol health — rising TVL indicates growth; falling TVL can signal problems
- Yield sustainability — more TVL means fees are distributed across more depositors
TVL limitations
TVL can be manipulated (e.g. by a single whale depositing and withdrawing), and it doesn't account for leverage (borrowed assets counted multiple times). Always look at TVL alongside other metrics like user count, transaction volume, and audit status.
DeFi TVL by chain (2026)
BNB Smart Chain consistently ranks among the top 3 chains by TVL, driven by low fees and a large retail user base across Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
How to check TVL
DeFi Llama (defillama.com) is the most widely used TVL tracker, covering thousands of protocols across all major chains.
